Support Network Activities

Accessing funding for Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an important step for individuals with disabilities who want to live independently and receive tailored support services. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), SIL funding provides participants with the resources necessary to access accommodation and support that meets individual needs and preferences.

Individuals who have disabilities are provided with a specialised form of accommodation and support known as supported independent living (SIL), which is aimed to assist them in living independently within the community. SIL seeks to enable individuals to lead self-directed lifestyles while providing them with the appropriate support. It does this by promoting independence, choice, and community inclusion.

Eligibility for Supported Independent Living Funding

The NDIA will consider participants to be potentially eligible for SIL if they meet three criteria:

  • They are aged 18 or over.
  • They need active disability support for at least eight hours a day, in addition to some level of support at other times.
  • Supported independent living would meet the NDIS funding criteria.

The NDIA will evaluate whether home assistance and alternative housing options may be better suited to the individual’s needs. This includes special housing for people with disabilities, personalised living arrangements, home adaptations, temporary and intermediate accommodation, residential aged care adapted for younger individuals, and personal care assistance services.

What SIL Funding Covers

Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) covers a wide range of supports and services tailored to meet the individual needs of participants. Here’s what SIL funding typically covers:

  • Daily Living Supports
  • Household tasks
  • Skill development
  • Community participation
  • Healthcare Support
  • Giving participants medication
  • Medical appointments
  • Building skills in things like meal preparation and cooking, cleaning, and developing a routine
  • Helping to action any behaviour support plans you have

What SIL Funding Doesn’t Cover

While Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) covers a broad range of supports and services, there are certain expenses and items that it typically does not cover. Here’s what SIL funding generally doesn’t cover:

  • Rent or mortgage payments: Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding is designated to cover the costs associated with support services, facilitating individuals with disabilities to live independently. However, it does not extend to covering housing expenses such as rent or mortgage payments.
  • Non-Disability Related Expenses: SIL funding is meant to help people who have needs linked to their disability. So, it usually doesn’t pay for things that aren’t directly related to the participant’s disability, like entertainment costs, general home bills, or medical bills that aren’t related to the disability.
  • Groceries and other living expenses: NDIS funding is limited in its coverage of general living expenses, including consumables, and does not extend to meal preparation services, which are components of Supported Independent Living.
  • Utilities and household bills: It is crucial to understand that SIL financing does not cover costs associated with utilities, like power, water, gas, or internet fees. Participants are accountable for autonomously handling these domestic expenditures.

Individuals can confidently and lucidly navigate their options by acquiring a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and responsibilities that are intrinsic to Supported Independent Living (SIL). Equipped with this understanding, individuals can cultivate their holistic well-being and enhance their overall quality of life by adopting a way of life that revolves around autonomy.
